How Much More Would You Pay For Eco-Friendly Wipes?

As the world takes action to reduce single use plastics, such as straws, TIDDOX is anticipating the impact this will have on wipes in due course. As a major wipes manufacturer, TIDDOX has a focus on providing disposable cleaning wipes, without harming the planet. To this end, it is dedicated to producing sustainable, eco-friendly products. Indeed, management feel they have a responsibility to their customers to lead the way in this regard. TIDDOX already supply recycled rags nationwide, as well as a huge range of biodegradable and compostable wipes. However, they are always looking for ways to reduce the carbon footprint. Hence, their focus on designing and making products that are good for the environment. To do this, it is necessary to consider all aspects of the product life cycle from source to disposal.

Balancing Sustainability with Performance

The product development process operates within these parameters. Specifically looking to ensure that new products incorporate sustainable materials. For instance, TIDDOX has recently launched a number of exciting new products that incorporate cellulose fibres, viscose or rayon as the majority component. To ensure sustainability, TIDDOX looks to maximise the biodegradable content of its products to make them environmental friendly. For example, by using rayon, viscose, wood pulp, cellulose, and cotton, which are 100% biodegradable. Not only are these inputs eco-friendly, they also make TIDDOX products more absorbent.

In certain cases, for additional strength or to reduce linting, non-biodegradable materials are mixed into the material composition of certain products. For example, oil based materials. However, where possible, these will represent the minority of the material composition.

Having said that, in reducing or eliminating the oil based component of wipes, the challenge remains how to also reduce the lint. Typically, these oil-based materials are essential in providing the wipes with strength, durability and ultra low lint features. So, whilst biodegradable material may be preferred, innovative technology will help match the desired performance.

How Much More Would You Pay For Eco-Friendly Wipes?

Trevor Sharp, the business development manager for TIDDOX, believes that customers are prepared to pay a premium for green wipes. “In fact, they’re actively requesting we make them. Particularly the younger customer base of business owners. Accordingly, this has resulted in TIDDOX launching a number of 100% biodegradable wipes, such as Nu-Cloths, cotton cellulose wipes, and recycled industrial jumbo paper towel rolls”.

Whilst, the cost of making eco-friendly products remains higher in many cases, many customers have indicated a willingness to pay more for these products. Anything from a 10% to 30% premium above the cost of competing traditional wipes. This is encouraging, and also a growing sentiment, that seems to have a strong momentum. Furthermore, wipes are engineered and designed, so changing the mix is easy, it just costs more. Also, delivering the level of expected performance also requires added attention. Particularly, in the areas of durability and tear resistance of the wipes. However, as technology constantly improves, and the world demands more environmentally friendly wipes, the trend direction heads forward positively. Also, TIDDOX expects that prices of green wipes will drop as usage increases. Hence, it continues to look at ways to increase its usage of materials that are recyclable, degradable and sustainable

However, at this stage, certain specialist wipes designed for lint-sensitive applications, and medical tasks, still rely on an element of non-biodegradable materials. “So, whilst we don’t expect all wipes to transform over to 100% eco-friendly green materials in the short term, we do expect the demand to grow. And, as such, usage of non-green friendly wipes will reduce over time”, he added.

Eco-Friendly Wipes

One of the growing sustainable materials used in wipes is bamboo. It’s biodegradable, and does not involve any palm oils, binders or chemicals. And, it’s very absorbent, strong and durable. TIDDOX has recently launched its “Eco-Strong Wipes” made of this renewable material. This product now joins the growing range of TIDDOX’s eco-friendly wipes, some of which are highlighted below.

Nu-Cloths are soft, non-abrasive wipes made from double reinforced crepe. This recycled material absorbs water, solvents, grease, lubricants, adhesives, paint and oil. Interestingly, these biodegradable wipes combine a cloth like softness in a disposable wipe. Not only are they great for spills, but also ideal for cleaning and polishing equipment and surfaces. Particularly, scratch-sensitive surfaces.

Another eco-friendly wipes product is the cotton cellulose nonwoven wipes. These low lint disposable wipes are completely free of oil based materials, additives, chemicals or binders. And, they’re absorbent and soft to touch. Also, they are ideal for lint-sensitive cleaning tasks because of their very low particle count. Their wide apertures pick up contaminants on surfaces. Moreover, they’re great for applying and removing chemicals and solvents.

TIDDOX‘s 3-ply recycled cellulose blue jumbo rolls are very popular in workshops. These disposable towels are glued and embossed for added strength and absorbency. Also, they’re great for glass cleaning, and wiping oil and grease. They offer cost savings by bulk packaging 1000 3-ply paper towels on a roll. And, the tear off sheets of standard size save wastage. A cost effective and economical alternative to rags.

Rags are a great way to reduce wastage going into landfill. By recycling t-shirts, flannel shirts, business shirts, skirts, bath towels and fleeces into rags, we extend the life of these products.

Sustainable Product Lifecycle

In developing products, TIDDOX considers the entire product life cycle from source to disposal. Part of the process in producing nonwoven wipes from sustainable materials, is partnering with similar minded raw material suppliers. To this end, TIDDOX only uses a select number of hand-picked trusted suppliers that it has built relationships with over time. We only work with trusted and reputable manufacturing partners, that share similar values regarding quality, transparency and ethics. Furthermore, we strive to understand the raw material source, staffing and manufacturing processes of all parties in the supply chain to try and ensure our products are sourced and manufactured in a responsible manner.

Another aspect to improving recyclability, is the manner of disposal of the wipes by end users. Particularly with single-use wipes, take care to educate users how best to dispose of wipes after use. For instance, to avoid unnecessary littering, and wipes going into landfill.

Using recyclable packaging also helps the planet. Especially eliminating plastic packaging, or using recycled plastic packaging where possible. Most of TIDDOX packaging does not contain plastics, with the majority packaged in recyclable cardboard.

We believe that the convenience of disposable wipes will continue, however a greater proportion will move to natural materials, from sustainable sources. Also, the education around use and disposal will also improve.
